Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Special Political Mission “Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team pursuant to resolutions 1526 (2004) and 2253 (2015) concerning Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and the Taliban and associated individuals and entities”, functionally reporting to the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB) of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), United Nations, New York. The incumbent will report directly to a Senior Political Affairs Officer in SCSOB.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political and terrorism-related issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the countries and thematic mandates on the agenda of the Security Council.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Monitors national and regional level political developments that could become a threat to international peace and security.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the Security Council.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and member states and/or Panels of Experts on coordination and policy matters.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations.
  • Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases information relating to the Security Council, its subsidiary organs and Panels of Experts.
  • Participates in missions of the Security Council and its subsidiary organs to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
  • As appropriate, accompanies the Monitoring Team Coordinator and/or experts on trips to selected countries: coordinates the necessary logistics and prepares background information for such trips, and upon return prepares notes.
  • Prepares meetings of the Chairs of the Committees and the Monitoring Team with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Security Council, its subsidiary bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
  • Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration or other related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience working on and supporting UN sanctions issues is required. Experience in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council or its subsidiary organs is required. Experience working on peace and security issues, in particular, terrorism-related issues concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and Taliban is desirable. Experience in drafting formal correspondence and other official communications is desirable. Experience in supporting the drafting of reports for intergovernmental bodies or Executive Boards is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Fluency in another official United Nations language is desirable.
